Report of Reading Competition on 5th March 2010

January 2011

The 61st Reading Competition was held at Cantell School. Despite the loss of one adjudicator at short notice, the competition went ahead successfully, thanks to Prof.Sparkes stepping in. The other adjudicator was Jenny Gibbon. Both provided helpful feedback and sensible adjudications which contributed to a very enjoyable evening for all who entered.

We welcomed Bedales School and Kings School, Winchester for the first time and numbers were sustained by competitors from Portsmouth Grammar School, St Swithun's, Westgate, Winchester College, and Cantell. Some categories had as many as 10 entrants.

Thanks, as ever, go to the Gilbert Murray Society and the Classical Association for their generous financial support of the competition. I am also very grateful to the teachers who gave up their time to prepare the students and, of course, to the students, without whom there would be no competition.
