Quid Novi?

September 2013

Welcome  to this year’s Classical Association programme. Brian Sparkes, Honorary Secretary, has already sent the programme by email  and ordinary mail where necessary.  Your Committee hopes you will be pleased by the activities on offer and will feel able to attend many events throughout 2013 to 2014. As you can see, at the heart of the programme are the academic lectures which I hope you will agree are varied and interesting. The Reading Competitions take place at Cantell School in March and there are two social events, the Saturnalia in January and the Prandium in July . The year begins with ProfessorMichael Scott’s Talk, entitled ‘ What a way to die - drowning in Ancient Greece’,  on 17th October at King Edward V1 School in Southampton. He has appeared frequently on television and there may therefore be quite a large audience.

I thank your committee for their hardwork this year. I should like to thank in particular  Brian Sparkes for his huge commitment to his role as Honorary Secretary and his efficiency. One of the major tasks this year was the overhaul of data systems and he was the driving force behind that. I would be very grateful if Heads of Department would now and in the future let the Honorary Secretary or President know of changes such as staff arrivals or departures. It would also be very useful to hear of events of a Classical nature to enable them to be publicised by email and on our website at .

As you know, Brian and I became Honorary Secretary and President respectively at the beginning of the academic year 2012 to 2013. Alison Townsend, the Association’s previous Secretary, left the area, as she and her husband, Alex,  moved to Dartmouth.  Last April they became proud parents of a daughter, Beatrice Florence. Alex Walker joined Bedales as Head of Department in September 2012. During the Summer holidays of 2012, Jacqui Coles, Head of Classics at KES, married and became Jacqui Meredith and Alexandra Murray-Bruce , a member of the Classics Department at PGS,  also married  and became Alex Clarke. Brian Sparkes celebrated a ‘significant’ birthday in May this year & Diana  reached the same milestone in September.

I look forward to seeing many of you during the year.
